Based on the video, "Consuming Kids" it has been proposed that from the moment that children come out of the womb they are targets for marketers everywhere. Essentially children are seen as purchasing power, after all, they are the ones that know how delicious Scooby-Doo macaroni is. What is our society "advertising" when people are watching television shows and commercials in which 12 year old boys aspire to have a porsche? Or when Ashley Tisdale sings of Prada Bags, Jimmy Choo Shoes, and Tiffany Jewelry? The uprise of technology has left little room for anybody to escape the constant branding, advertising, and images that are seen in almost every media outlet. There has been a loss of values, and creativity. There has been a rise in childhood obesity, materialism, and mental illness and worst of all there has been a decrease in acceptance of others. As children begin to emulate the actors and characters they not only see on television, but wear on their backpacks and pajamas, are they beginning to model behaviors that can be damaging to themselves and the people around them?Once again I ask, "How is the media changing 'us' and is this what we really want?" Begin to observe the media has it pops up in your everyday life. What is the impact that it has on you? That it may have on others exposed? Discuss this on a large level: (gender, social class, bullying, health, etc).
